STORIES WRITTEN IN THE OPERATING THEATRE

Perhaps not so long ago, and not so far away, a woman went to the hospital to give birth to her first child.

The labour was slow and young parents could be together during this event. They were both excited and supported each other at this exceptional moment, watched their breaths and counted the minutes between contractions. Trained in a reputable birthing school, they knew everything about each stage of labour. Time passed but she was not able to deliver the baby. They watched with concern as the medical personnel moved faster and faster around them. They listened to the beeping apparatus that monitored the condition of the mother and baby. Long hours passed, but the baby was not born yet - it didn't even come close to the next stage. Tired and upset, they heard that there is no time to wait and there will be a caesarean section. It wasn't supposed to be like that, the birth plan was different. But the child's safety is the most important thing.

The woman was taken to the operating theatre and the operation began. The future father was waiting outside, because entering the block is not allowed. Luckily, the baby was born healthy and strong. After a few days, the proud parents were able to return home with their newborn child. The young dad was excited. He packed everything that is most important: a car seat, baby’s clothes, a blanket, the young mother's favourite skinny jeans, make-up kit, high heels, and a blouse with a ruffle. It is known - a woman has just given birth, she is no longer pregnant, so she can wear clothes which she likes most. After all, pregnancy is not a disease and nothing changes after giving birth.

Imagine the man's surprise when it turned out that none of what he had brought for the woman was fit for use. He asked with concern looking at his partner's large belly, if she had any dressings there. After all, in his mind, she had an operation, a large cut, and layers of gauze fastened on adhesive tape. So this is why she cannot fasten her pants, and the frill of the jabot is in the way of the "dressing". The woman shook her head in disbelief; what dressing ?! What wound through the whole belly?! Perhaps a long time ago, or even earlier, this was how caesarean section wounds looked like, and the dressing consisted of gauze applied layer on layer in such a way that it turned a woman into an Egyptian mummy. But now the dressing is discreet, comfortable, easy to apply, and the cut is small in a place that can be easily hidden.

Maybe we are not able to plan everything and learn to control our body in every situation. Fortunately, we can, and are able to perform treatments with minimal cuts that are not visible. We use dressings that are invisible, do not leak and do not cause chafing. This year this woman and her friends are going to wear a bikini on the beach! One of the friends has had a breast amputation, the other one is after a square catheter, and she herself has had a caesarean section. None of the sunbathers will notice that their bodies have been through so much.
